Irene Dunne stars in this Depression Era adaptation of Edith Wharton's classic novel about the lives of those trapped in the golden cage of the Gilded Age. Countess Ellen Olenska's (Dunne) arrival into the ranks of the top tier of Manhattan's elite upsets the carefully ordered lives of the supposedly care-free, and embroils a young lawyer (John Boles) in a love affair doomed by the era's rigid social code.
