Jerry Herman's chamber-musical from 1969, DEAR WORLD, was widely regarded as a 'flop'. With Angela Lansbury in the leading role, it had a book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and was based on Jean Giraudoux's play "The Madwoman of Chaillot". The Australian premiere came in a semi-staged concert in Sydney in 1996 to a small, invited audience. We hear here the song "Pretty Garbage ... Ugly Garbage" from towards the end of Act I - sung by the Sewerman, Gabrielle and Constance. The performers are Graeme Ewer, Anne Grigg and Robyn Arthur with an orchestral ensemble conducted by Peter Mapelson.
