I am looking for the last stilt houses of Cagayan de Oro City. There used to be a whole village of stilt houses in barangay Lapasan. The individual houses were connected by footbridges.
I found a few stilt houses in the barangays Puerto and Gusa and had to realize that the city has a lot more fishermen than I thought. All along the coast of the city, you can find fishermen on the waterfront.
However, their housing situation and quality of life are shocking. These residents are almost at the bottom of the social ladder. Nevertheless, I find fun-loving and friendly people here.
We spoke to a teacher who asked us why I was coming here to film. I don't want to denounce anything, I just want to make it clear that more people have to live in unfavorable conditions than you might think when you see all the subdivisions and condominiums sprouting up on every corner in the city.
Children help their parents dig shells out of the seabed at low tide for their next meal. Fishermen rest under their stilt houses for the hard work of the coming night.
We were also with the people in barangay Puntod and there are two videos about it:
