In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, illegal mining areas multiplied along the rivers and are increasingly closer to indigenous communities in the Yanomami Territory, located in the far north of Brazil, between the states of Amazonas and Roraima.

Of the 2,400 football pitches devastated by mining in the Yanomami Territory, 500 of them were felled last year alone, an increase of 30%. Mining now involves large businessmen who, spurred by higher gold prices, invest $30,000 or more in each illegal mining area.

The explosion of illegal mining within the Yanomami Territory has led to disease and violence against indigenous people, including isolated Moxihatëtëma groups. They demand that the Brazilian government reactivate protection bases along the rivers in the region, block supplies from reaching the mining areas, remove the invaders and destroy the seized machinery. #MinersOut!
