John Chavis
(c. 1763–June 15, 1838
, was a African American Hero, of the Continental Army.

Born in Oxford, NC, he fought vigilantly forAmerican Revolutionary War.
and served in the 5th Virginia Regiment
He studied at the College of New Jersey and finished his studies at Liberty Hall Academy in Virginia.
In 1808, Chavis opened a school in his home,
where he taught both white and Black children.
As an educator,
Chavis instructed his college-bound students in Latin and Greek
which were required classical subjects in the colleges and universities of that time.
Only the most prominent families in the South studied at Chavis' school.
Senators, Doctors, from Portugal,
and the Territorial Governor of New Mexico.
Chavis wasmurdered by whites who did not want him educating Blacks.
He was buried on the plantation of Senator Willie P. Mangum, A former student.
America owes a debt of gratitude to John Chavis,
African American Educator, War veteran, & Religious Leader.
