Jan Claassen, MD, PhD, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, NY, discusses electrographic seizures following acute brain injury and currently available treatments. This type of seizure is associated with increased metabolic demand. Unlike epilepsy patients, patients with acute brain injury may not be able to adequately increase blood perfusion to seizing parts of the brain, increasing the risk of getting harmed in those brain regions. Dr Claassen reviews the various treatment options, including those available to refractory patients, highlighting the importance of early and short treatment.
