In this excerpt from part two of the Massachusetts School of Law's Program, Books Of Our Time, which is dedicated to Bruce Levine's book - The Fall of the House of Dixie: The Civil War and the Social Revolution That Transformed the South, Mr. Levine tells the story of Garland White, who escaped enslavement by Robert Toombs, fled to Canada, returned to join the Union cause, and was reunited with his mother amongst the rubble of Richmond, VA; after being separated for thirty years. Mr. Levine is a Professor of history at The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The host is Lawrence R. Velvel, Dean of The Massachusetts School of Law.
