At 20 weeks gestation, Juliana was diagnosed with a severe congenital heart defect. She would require several surgeries to repair her heart and even then, only one side of her heart would have to do the work of both sides. Juliana was born four weeks early because she was in heart failure. It was determined that she was not a candidate for surgical repair to her heart, but she was a candidate for a heart transplant.
The normal wait time for an infant heart to become available is three to six months – Juliana was not well enough to wait that long. Just 17 days after she was born, Juliana received a new heart. She is currently the youngest heart transplant recipient at Texas Children’s.
