Runway walking was always my favorite part of pageant and model rehearsals! Here are a few basic turns and poses for runway walking. It’s all about confidence! Most of the time, the show’s choreographer or a creative manager will let you know the style of walk needed for the show. But sometimes you’ll be able to freestyle and express yourself on the runway! I shared a few fundamental turns and poses that will get you up and down that runway.
Names of basic poses featured in this video:
“T” position: the base position, also called basic or first position, model stance (make 2 o’clock with your feet)
“A” Pose: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your toes pointed out at about a 45 angle. Gracefully place your hands on your hips and be sure to “break your wrists.” Turn your hands so the audience sees the outside edge of your hands.
“I”Pose: Place your weight on your right leg with your toe pointing at a 45 angle to the right. Make 2 o’clock with your feet. Bend your left knee, swing to the right, and squeeze against your right knee. Your left toe points straight ahead and your left heel is lifted off the floor. You can rest your right hand on your hip. Your left hand can brush along the seam line.
Sidestep Pose: To begin a sidestep pose, stand in a “T” position and move your front foot to the side, allowing your weight to remain on the opposite foot.
Turns featured:
Half Turn: Commonly used at the end of the runway to turnaround. 2 half turns can be used at in the middle of the runway and at the end of the runway to attractively show a 360° view of the
Garments you’re wearing.
Backstep Turn: Step back and pivot turn on your toes to make a 180° turn.
Full Turn: Place on foot over the other, and pivot to make a 360° turn on the balls of your feet. If done in the middle of the runway, step out of the turn and continue to walk. Or go into a pose if you are at the end of the runway.
