DOMINGA MURRAY: If you want to be an emergency or a patient care technician but don't want to foot the tuition bill, now, you may not have to.
WENDY HORTON: We're so excited for the earn-while-you-learn program.
DOMINGA MURRAY: UVA is rolling out an opportunity for people to start working in the health field without paying for classes.
WENDY HORTON: It's our way of making sure that we are caring for our community.
DOMINGA MURRAY: Veronica Desper will manage the incoming technicians. She says the program is helping fight the COVID-19 strain.
VERONICA DESPER: It's just like every other part of healthcare. We're facing staffing challenges and shortages across the pharmacy enterprise.
DOMINGA MURRAY: Dr. Wendy Horton is the chief executive officer for UVA Health. This program, she says, is designed to meet people where they are.
WENDY HORTON: Earn-while-you-learn requires people only to have a GED or a high school degree.
VERONICA DESPER: No experience necessary.
DOMINGA MURRAY: Those who end up in the pipeline will learn and get paid at the same time, working toward qualifications.
WENDY HORTON: They have a job, 40 hours a week paid. And half of that time is spent on the job training.
DOMINGA MURRAY: Starting pays vary. A new pharmacy tech, for instance, starts at $16.25 an hour.
WENDY HORTON: They're eligible for retirement, all the full-fledged benefits of a UVA Health employee.
