This long lecture explains how noise-shaping ADCs can be naturally derived by aiming to cancel the quantization noise in an ADC. This approach first gives rise to the error-feedback noise-shaping. This is then finally modified to get the popular delta-sigma modulator. Finally, it also briefly shows one can derive and obtain the VCO-based noise-shaping ADCs, where phase is the quantity that is digitized.
