Lebanon's parliament on Thursday (15/10) elected General Emile Lahoud, a popular army commander, to be the country's next president. He also had the crucial backing of Syria, which is a major power broker in ebanon. An opposition block led by legislator Walid Jumblatt boycotted the vote, but the rest of parliament overwhelmingly supported Lahoud as Lebanon's first new president since the end of its 15-year civil war. Lahoud will replace President Elias Hrawi, who leaves office on November 24.
