Close-up view on the boiling lava lake of Erta Ale volcano. Erta Ale is a large shield volcano in the in the central Danakil depression (NE Ethiopia), famous for its persistent lava lake which has been active during most of the past decades since it was first discovered in the 1960s. The lava fountains at the surface of the lava lake shown here in close-up from only tens of meters distance reflect the degassing of magmatic gasses rising from deeper sources and carrying the heat to keep the lava lake liquid in a delicate balance.
