In this video I talk about 12 volt Mabuchi motors of a form factor found in many brands of 4 track cassette player such as Tascam, Yamaha and Fostex. I talk a little about how the motor speed and rotation direction relates to cassette transport speed and design. Then I take one of these motors to pieces to show what's inside and give a basic explanation of how the servo PCB, motor control chip and commutator work, the sort of reasons they could fail and roughly how to go about fixing an unresponsive or faulty motor.
