A January 1961 recording of 12-year-old Brazilian pianist Rosana Maria Martins playing Schumann's Papillons and Debussy's Poissons d'or.
Martins had won the 12-and-under category of the Concours International des Jeuneusses Musicales in Berlin in August 1960. (Jean-Philippe Collard won 2nd prize in the same category - the 12-15 category was won by Jean-Bernard Pommier and the 2nd prize went to Maria Joao Pires). They organized a tour of Europe for her in January 1961 and the recording was made at a Deutsche Grammophon Studio in Hannover.
This first of only two recordings made by Martins finds the 12-year-old playing with a maturity and refinement that absolutely belies her young age: a beautifully polished sonority, elegantly crafted phrasing, and subtlety of nuance - how delicately her timing, dynamics, and tonal shadings work together.
This is one of only two records recorded by the Brazilian pianist, the other being a disc of Mozart Sonatas on the Connoisseur Society label in 1969.
Many thanks to Ms. Martins for providing the photograph of her and Arthur Rubinstein in Paris in January 1961 and for her permission to upload this recording, and thanks to Federico Rossi for finding and transferring the recording and for the photographs of the album.
