Top science and marine engineering students from around the world spent 11 months designing, building, and testing human-powered submarines. They gathered at QinetiQ's Ocean Basin for a unique challenge. Teams race their submarines underwater, piloted by scuba divers, around a demanding slalom course. Only 12 teams made it to the final after managing logistics, passing inspections, and meeting safety requirements.
Each team competes against the clock, with penalty points for breaking the surface. Safety boats and divers are on hand to assist when needed. Teams strive for glory as they problem-solve and modify their designs throughout the week of competitive races.
Even these human-powered submarines have a level of sophistication as any underwater endevours are inherently complex, even working at a depth some would assume is negligible.
Research and reconnaissance submarines working at deep-sea depths are highly complex and sophisticated vessels and are normally certified to do so to meet astringent safety parameters to ensure the safety of crew and research passengers.
