Inspired by his wife, a former nurse, PNNL materials scientist Curtis Larimer and his co-workers created a superhydrophobic, “water-fearing” material that retains its water-shedding properties when stretched. It’s called ElastiDry. When applied in the manufacturing process to latex gloves and other personal protective equipment (PPE), this spray-on, hydrophobic coating would prevent liquids containing bacterial, viral—such as Ebola and the coronavirus—and other dangerous contaminants from “sticking.” Ultimately, ElastiDry would provide more protection for our health-care workers.
