This show was the one that launched Billy's career. Billy's band was contacted to play because other scheduled bands had legal problems that the promoter of the Festival in Puerto Rico had. Columbia Records showed interest in Billy Joel, for the shows of April 1 to 3 of the year 1972. The band played in rainy conditions, gaining the admiration of the present public. The number of people who turned out is unknown, but according to bassist Larry Russesl, it was a massive audience. Fortunately we have the Soundboard Recording of that day. The other shows are still out of print. Supposedly the audience was roughly 50,000-60,000 people.
The director of Columbia Records was quite impressed with the talent of a young Joel, who at the time was just 22 years old at the time. His voice was not so developed, it lacked power and potency, that he developed in later years. For all BJ fans, this show is legendary, as the band performs 3 songs from the Piano Man album, without it being released until 1973. Which means, you are listening to versions of the Piano Man album without being recorded yet. Also Billy plays a couple of covers of The Box Tops and The Rolling Stones.
