Mad World is the second track of the band Tears for Fears debut album, The Hurting. Written by c-founder Roland Orzabal and sung by bassist as well as co-founder Curt Smith, Mad World was the bands third single as well as their first UK chart hit and their first International chart hit.
This song, as well as many other on this album, was influenced by Arthur Janov's theory of "Primal Scream Therapy". Quotes about the songs are as follows:
"Lyrically the song is pretty loose. It throws together a lot of different images to paint a picture without saying anything specific about the world." —Roland Orzabal
"It's very much a voyeur's song. It's looking out at a mad world from the eyes of a teenager." —Curt Smith
