Tmac discusses several key officiating aspects of this play in Minnesota, including the concept of clearing the catcher before attempting to locate the baseball (e.g., Barrett watches Guardians catcher Hedges' movements and reactions so as to minimize the likelihood of a collision between umpire and fielder), opening the gate as the catcher meanders toward foul territory to try and catch the high fly foul ball, and finally calling the play itself including whether the catcher caught this ball while still in live ball territory or whether it should be nullified due to the catcher catching the ball while already in dead ball territory (e.g., in the dugout). The top step of the dugout is considered in play for the purposes of this rule.
If there were any runners on base at the time, this would be a catch-and-carry base award (dead ball + one base awarded for all runners).
