Giant Schnauzers have bags of intelligence and energy to spare, created as working dogs; if an owner can offer the attention, exercise, socialization, and training the Schnauzer needs, then you'll have a loyal and fantastic companion dog.
High levels of intelligence can work well with some breeds because they love to please their owners; with other breeds that might be more willful, intelligence makes the situation worse and the dog all that harder to train and socialize.
There are three Schnauzer breeds, and the Giant Schnauzer is the largest. You wouldn't know it by the way they look, but the Giant Schnauzer has a tremendously playful nature.

Giant Schnauzer Temperament
There are two dogs rolled into one with a Giant Schnauzer; on the one hand, they have the calm, lovable nature of the consummate companion dog; on the other, they are forceful, energetic, and fearless, the prerequisites of an excellent working and guarding dog.
Giant Schnauzers are territorial dogs that take that responsibility seriously; they are certainly intimidating dogs when they want to be. However, Giant Schnauzers are naturally wary of strange people; they are playful and happy companion dogs for the whole family when they aren't in a protective and guarding mode.
Having a dog as willful and intelligent can present a considerable challenge to even experienced trainers and dog handlers. Still, a Giant Schnauzer is just too much for an inexperienced owner because when you add to the mix the dog's dominant personality, they really will be impossible to control.
So experienced owners only should take on a Giant Schnauzer. The ideal way to train a dog of this nature is by firm and consistent training methods, alongside lots of praise and treats.
Another type of training your Giant Schnauzer will need is early socialization, which will introduce your puppy to new people, other dogs, sights, and sounds that might otherwise unnerve an anxious or overly nervous dog.
Giant Schnauzers need masses of exercise and are pent-up bundles of energy. The dog needs interactive playtime, don't expect to turn your Schnauzer out into the backyard and let him sort out his exercise needs himself.
Schnauzers can be a real nuisance if they get bored and restless, engaging him mentally and physically every day. If you enjoy jogging or cycling, take your Giant Schnauzer with you.
Giant Schnauzers are so intelligent and clever they enjoy working out ways to get around your instructions; on top of that, they tend only to obey the family member they believe is the dominant person.
For training to work and prevent this, all family members need to be on board with the training message. Trying to be the good guy in these situations will only provide a Schnauzer an opportunity to take advantage.
Giant Schnauzer History
The Giant Schnauzer originally came from Germany and is one of three Schnauzer breeds; the AKC listed them over 50 years ago.
The first records of the Giant Schnauzer go back to the German state of Bavaria and Wurttemberg in the 17th century. Schnauzers Initially were thought to be rough-coated Pinschers.
Breeders used several dogs to create the Giant Schnauzer, such as the Black Great Dane, Rottweilers, Dobermans, the Standard Schnauzer, and others.
The Schnauzer’s original purpose was as a farm dog, guarding property and helping to drive livestock to market.
Not much was known about the dog outside Germany until the two World Wars where the Germans used the dog as messengers.
The first Schnauzers were imported to America in the 1930s but didn’t become popular until the 1960s.
Final Thoughts - Giant Schnauzer
Giant Schnauzers can make fantastic family companions providing they get enough physical and mental activities; the dog is incredibly athletic.
Socialize your Giant Schnauzer when they are as young as possible to curb their territorial and over-protective nature. In addition, socialization when very young may help calm their aggressive tendencies towards other dogs and curb their instincts to chase smaller creatures.
