Advocates and brewers in Calgary and Edmonton are working to increase representation, inclusivity and diversity in the craft beer industry.
Sharon Ruyter often found that she was the only person of colour enjoying a beer at local craft breweries in Calgary. When Ruyter called on Alberta breweries to be more inclusive, Erin McQuitty, owner of Born Brewing Co., was up to the challenge. Ruyter and McQuitty founded the Hop Forward Society to address these challenges in Alberta’s craft brewing community. Jason Tait is the head brewer at Asymmetrical Brewing in Edmonton, and is one of the few racialized brewery owners in the province. Each of them are helping change the face of the craft brewing industry in their own way.
