The working direction used with angle grinders tends to be a bone of contention among industry pros. After having talked to our applications engineers – and read a lot of online posts – we know that many tradespersons are almost superstitious about whether sparks should fly forwards or back, or whether you should cut by pushing or pulling. As with many things in life, however, things are not simply black or white – right or wrong – with cutting work. Instead, there are pros and cons to choosing one direction rather than the other. While it can make work simpler and the grinder easier to handle if you work by pulling the machine, this turns a potential kick-back into a ‘kick-forward’ – which can be dangerous! If you push to cut, however, then the sparks now fly towards you but the machine moves forwards and away from you if you lose control over it. For a demonstration, check out our new video. We also show beginners how easy it is to perform an angle grinder changeover.
