Heroin use and abuse of prescription opioid medications is on the rise in Alaska. Unfortunately, that's affecting a vulnerable population.
Babies exposed to opioids and heroin while in the womb can be born addicted. They must go through withdrawal in the first few days of life.
Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) occurs when a baby exposed to addictive medications or drugs begins to withdraw from these substances after birth. Babies with NAS may cry excessively, develop diarrhea, have trouble sleeping or even have seizures.
