Facelifts really are designed to restore youthfulness and balance to your face, and really reverse those effects of aging that people struggle with. As you age, gravity acts on the tissues of the face, head, and neck. So you'll get signs such as jowling or deepening of the nasal labial folds. The fat, the muscle, and the skin, begins to sag and pull down. And really a facelift is designed to reverse those effects.
So you're pulling up on not only the skin, but also the muscle and the fat. It may occur at an earlier age. We've now determined that patients in their late 30s, early 40s actually do prematurely age and might benefit from a facelift. Some patients age more gracefully and might be a good candidate later on in life. Now there's different types of facelifts. There's skin only facelifts, where you're only tightening the skin. There's deep plane facelifts, where you're actually tightening the skin, muscle, and fat of the face.
And really the specific type of facelift that you qualify for will depend on your aging patterns. A facelift is typically performed under local or general anesthesia. It's a same day surgery. You come in, you go home the very same day. During that first week, you have a lot of bruising, some black and blue, and a lot of swelling. Sometimes you may have drains that are placed to reduce collection of blood or fluids.
At your second postoperative visit, you'll have all the sutures and staples removed. You still have some black and blue and some swelling, but over the subsequent weeks, things begin to change. The swelling goes down, bruising reduces, and by four to six weeks, you're really back to normal.
