The first licensed marijuana shop in New York officially opened for business on December 29, 2022, well over a year after the US state legalised the drug for recreational use. Legislators say the delay was necessary to structure the legal market in a way that benefits those with prior arrests or convictions for marijuana crimes. The marijuana market is expected to generate around US$4 billion in revenue over the next 5 years.
