CIMT Series Tip 1/5)
Over the next few weeks, I will share a series of tips using Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) in a number of different activities. CIMT is great for children who suffer from BPI, hemiplegia, or brain injury that leads them to have an affected side. Stay tuned next week for the second activity in the series!

For this tip, have the child sit on a chair so they are unable to lean back too far, which can trigger extensor tone. You can use slime, play dough, or any other soft material that you can have an object sink into for the child to grab. Flat objects are more difficult to pick up than rounded or more dimensional objects. Wrap their unaffected side, and instruct them to grasp the objects off the slime. The slime helps strengthen the hand since the child can’t glide the object over the surface. Repeat this activity as needed so that your child begins using their affected side consistently.
