Here’s the scoop on cat poop.
Dealing with kitty litter is often the unpleasant part of having cats. Clumping litter makes the cleanup much easier. However, the common clay clumping litters contain the naturally occurring sodium bentonite which expands to several times its size when wet creating the clumps.
When bentonite is inhaled by cats or us it can cause inflammation and subsequent respiratory disease. Kitty litter also has a significant carbon footprint and is commonly sent to landfills taking up precious space.
So why not try to use biodegradable and compostable materials and save the world.
We have been composting cat litter for years now and it works great.
If the end product will be used in the garden it must undergo full thermophilic aerobic composting thereby kill all pathogens. We use a chicken layer mix that is meant for baby chickens and is a crumble. This material forms nice clumps and is easy to clean up.
I have also tried cat litter vermicomposting which also works well, but takes more time given the number of litter boxes we have.
