Canon just released firmware 1.6.0 which adds a new temperature limit menu item, allowing MUCH longer record times in the overheating modes. This is a time-lapse of a comparison between an R5 on 1.5.2 (the previous firmware) vs one on 1.6.0.
TL;DR: 1.6.0 allows the R5 to record continuous 4k120 for twice as long as the previous 1.5.2 firmware. However if you are shooting short clips, you should be able to get much longer than 2x because the updated firmware allows higher operating temperatures, and the higher the temperature, the faster the rate of passive cooling.
Setup:
- R5 on 1.6.0 and 1.5.2
- OEM LP-E6NH batteries (batteries never drained during this test)
- SanDisk Extreme Pro CFExpress + SanDisk Extreme Pro SD (SD unused since 4k120 only records to CFExpress)
- all settings identical (4k120, 1/125s, ISO 3200, f/2.8, 24mm)
- EF 24-70mm II with plain EF adapter
- AF and IBIS enabled
- 73 F/23 C ambient indoor temperature in a calm room (no active airflow).
R5 on 1.5.2:
15:38: red overheat warning begins
18:18: memory card full, formatted and resumed recording
20:46: first shut down from overheating
30:22: turn on and start recording again. overheat timer says 1:00.
36:50: overheats and shuts down again (recorded 6:28 even though it said 1:00)
R5 on 1.6.0:
18:18: memory card full, formatted and resumed recording
21:42: white overheat warning begins
29:46: stops recording due to card write speed
31:02: stops recording due to card write speed again
31:38: resume testing with SanDisk CFExpress swapped for Angelbird CFExpress
36:02: red overheat warning begins
39:38: first shut down from overheating
42:02: shuts down from overheating again
43:02: shuts down from overheating again
