Ankle arthritis can really affect your quality of life. A great study from Canada has shown that ankle arthritis can affect your quality of life as much as severe hip arthritis and even end stage heart failure. Ankle arthritis affects up to 30,000 patients a year in the UK alone and in this video Mr Andrew Goldberg, an orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist at the Wellington Hospital in London, explores what self help measures you can do at home to treat your ankle arthritis.
The good news is that the majority of cases of ankle arthritis do not need surgery. Activity modification, weight loss, pain killers and physiotherapy are examples of non-surgical treatments that can and should be tried. In addition, an ankle support or ankle brace can also be used and these can be excellent to help treat your ankle pain.
If you have a rheumatological cause such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout, early treatment with medication can often prevent the joint damage and this strategy should be initiated early on in your treatment plan. Injections of corticosteroids or other medications like PRP, stem cells may be considered but Mr Goldberg strongly recommends you obtain an expert opinion before considering such a treatment.
Surgery is an option if non-surgical treatments have been tried but ankle pain is still being experienced.
