Roberto Gutiérrez, redactor de la Revista Ejércitos, y Félix Arteaga, investigador principal del Real Instituto Elcano, explican las características del dron estadounidense MQ-9 Reaper, el que fue derribado por dos cazas rusos sobre el mar Negro.
“Van transmitiendo en tiempo real a los centros de control todas las imágenes que captan por las zonas de sobrevuelo. Eso le permite conocer movimientos de barcos, despliegues de tropas”, explica Arteaga. Su función principal son las misiones de inteligencia, reconocimiento y vigilancia, pero también se pueden usar para hacer ataques de precisión. “No son equipos que puedan causar gran destrucción cuantitativa, pero cualitativamente, para destruir blancos muy selectivos, personas, sí que son imprescindibles”, añade.
"Son mucho más baratos y los blancos a los que tienen que atacar no tienen capacidad de autodefensa y además son muy escurridizos. En lugar de perder el tiempo en validar la información de inteligencia y pasársela a un escuadrón de aviones de combate, es el propio dron el que reduce todos esos plazos, esos intervalos”, remata Gutiérrez.
