The horn:
A while ago I got to try the new Selmer Supreme alto saxophone. I was pleasantly surprised by this horn.
Here are my findings:
The good:
-The dynamic range is immense. From ppp to fff it's all there!
-The low Bb is in tune, that's the first time I have experienced that on any alto!
-The middle C# tunes right in the middle, maybe even somewhat high.
-The sound is very even when playing register changes and across the whole instrument.
The stuff one might get used to when playing the instrument a longer time. I only had one hour to try the instrument:
-The intonation did not seem not world-shockingly better. The octave between middle b and high b is still 15 cents sharp (with my mouthpiece!). A student of mine plays a Mark VI that has 11 cents difference.
-The high C# is still high.
-I am so used to a C# that is awfully low and nasal sounding that I am not sure I could get used to this sound.
-While having a big dynamic range, the horn sounds the same in all dynamics, it's hard to shape the sound.
General conclusion: The Supreme is a very good horn. It has a pleasantly bright sound and at the same time the sound production feels like butter at room temperature: smooth! I had the feeling I could not get into the sound though. The horn seemed to impose its sound on me. I would like to try this horn for a couple of months to see if I could have a click with it. But I would say that this horn is definitely should be an option for any saxophonist when trying out new horns. You will not be disappointed!
