Ethnographic photographer Sej Saraiya shares her experiences in spending time with the Apatani people in North East India and how it changed her own perspective of coexisting with nature.
For the last ten years, I have been traveling around Asia living and documenting remote cultures and their ways of being. Mt time and experiences with these cultures have been very humbling and continue to be so. BEHIND THE SCENES is a series of raw and unscripted LIVE videos in which I share stories behind each of the faces in my photographs. There is so much we can learn from indigenous people around the world. As long as their stories aren't shared, they remain objects of fascination. I share their stories with the hope of expanding the viewer's minds to the other ways of living, being and interacting with the earth.
The wrinkles on their faces carry numerous stories, the art on their bodies carry symbolisms distinctive of the tribe and are of historical significance, and their interactions with their surroundings is sacred and humbling.
I love to have my portraits on walls of private collectors around the world! With that, I hope to invoke curiosity about cultures completely different from one's own and start a conversation that could potentially help expand one's mind beyond what we already know and help find solutions to the environmentally unfeasible lifestyles we have adopted to make our planet into a happy home. The money from prints purchased by private collectors allows me to continue documenting these tribes and bring to you their stories. Thank you for watching.
With love,
Sej
