An airport, which is also called an air terminal or airfield is a site that paved runways and maintenance facilities for passenger and cargo aircraft. Some of the modern even airports have airport aprons, taxiway bridges own air traffic control centers, and passenger facility points such as restaurants and lounges.

While some countries, especially the United States have one or more fixed-base operators, serving general aviation. The operations of air traffic and oversight of an airport or group of airports are handled by an Airport Authority, which is generally governed by the government of the country.

The Transportation and Security Administration of a country is responsible for the safety and security of an airport as well as the passengers and cargo. The TSA provides the equipment and personnel to screen passengers and baggage at every point. For responding to the increased load of passengers, the airports work with TSA officials to improve the security checkpoints.

As of today, there are over 41,700 airports scattered all over the world and the United States alone has 13,000 airports listed with the Central Intelligence Agency.
