Durian From Seed Germination To Tree
Germination
Soak the Seeds: Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to help soften the seed coat and promote germination.
Planting Medium: Prepare a well-draining soil mix. A combination of garden soil, sand, and compost works well.
Planting Depth: Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep in the soil with the pointed end facing upwards.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the seeds lightly but regularly.
Light and Temperature: Place the pot in a warm, partially shaded area. Durian seeds require warm temperatures (25-30°C) for optimal germination.
Time: Seeds typically germinate in 2-4 weeks.
3. Seedling Care
Transplanting: Once the seedlings have 2-3 leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into the ground if the climate is suitable.
Location: good drainage, full sun, and protection from strong winds.
Soil: Ensure the soil is rich, well-draining, and slightly acidic (pH 6-7).
Spacing: If planting multiple trees, space them about 30-40 feet apart to accommodate their large canopy.
4. Growing Conditions
Watering: Water young trees regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Mature trees require less frequent watering.
Fertilization: Fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season. Organic matter such as compost or manure can be added to enrich the soil.
Mulching: Mulch around the to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
5. Maintenance
Pruning: Prune the tree to remove dead or diseased branches and to shape the canopy. This helps improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.
Pest and Disease Control: Monitor the tree for common pests (like borers and scales) and diseases (like root rot and leaf blight). Use organic or chemical controls as necessary.
6. Maturation
Patience: Durian trees typically take 5-7 years to bear fruit if grown from seed. Grafted trees may fruit earlier, around 4-5 years.
Flowering and Fruiting: Durian trees produce flowers directly on their trunk and branches. These flowers are pollinated by bats or insects.
Harvesting: Durian fruits are ready to harvest when they emit a strong smell and the spikes begin to soften. They may also drop naturally when ripe.
