A day after gunmen killed a Colombian senator, Colombian
President Ernesto Samper met his Venezuelan counterpart,
President Rafael Caldera, to discuss if they might be able to
restore order in Colombia's troubled northern region.

the army of Venezuela request the presence of the Colombian army
on the border of the Venezuela and Colombia as a guarantee for
peace and security which is all we want.
SOT President Samper (Colombia):"This management of conflict
areas is important and interesting and we are going to study the
possibility of being in accordance with our constitution for the
exclusive use of what we could call public disorder situations
that may damage the stability of international relations of
Colombia with any other country.
