More than 1,000 members of the United States Army place miniature U.S. flags in front of about 260,000 headstones across Arlington National Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day, as part of a yearly tradition honoring members who died while serving in the military.
Memorial Day pays tribute to members of the U.S. armed forces who died while performing their military duties. The holiday officially began at Arlington cemetery in 1868, according to the cemetery's website, and about 135,000 people typically visit the cemetery over the holiday weekend, it said.
