"There are so many kūpuna who have talked to me, tears in their eyes, who told me they were punished for speaking Hawaiian."
Throwback Thursday: In 1998, Hawaiian scholars Daviana McGregor and Mahealani Wendt met with author Thurston Twigg-Smith to discuss his book, "Hawaiian Sovereignty: Do The Facts Matter?" on an episode of Island Issues. Here Thurston, a descendant Lorrin Thurston (a primary factor in the illegal overthrow our beloved Queen Liliʻuokalani) attempts to claim that Hawaiians were never stopped from speaking the Hawaiian language.
