Obesity persists, but a good fat -- called brown fat -- is being conjured by researchers from white fat -- the bad stuff that no diet seems to vanquish for long. White fat stores fat, but brown fat burns it. Exploring a new weight-loss strategy, UCSF stem-cell and diabetes researcher Shingo Kajimura, PhD, now reports that he has converted white fat to brown fat using a diabetes drug, pioglitazone (Actos), to stabilize a molecule needed to generate brown fat cells.
