Day 423. 14km (73625kms 6 yrs)
In the end the half tent which I thought would save me the effort of pitching mine turned out to be just as much work as the wind picked up and the loose tarp flapped wildly and loudly about. But come morning the wind had dropped and with no one around I enjoyed another nudie coffee and camp pack-up.
At Ein Gedi signs written right to left in Hebrew and Arabic but with ‘Arabic’ (the ones we use in Europe) numerals it appeared the park was closed in the day time. It wasn’t of course, and on enquiring if it was ok to leave my bike I was met with the same shrug as yesterday which read - in the best possible way - I don’t care. Another refreshing change from recent ‘you can’t put your bike there’ experiences in parts of the Arab world.
In the old synagogue some tourists took an interest in me asking the standard questions, but with one unusual addition; did I carry a weapon? Guess the country 😆 Knowing little about Judaism I listened in on their tour of the well preserved ruins.
In Ein Gedi park I enjoyed the little waterfall-rich ‘wet hike’ up to David’s waterfall, and following the example of others waded in fully dressed for a shower under a particularly appealing fall. Feeling cooler and refreshed for the exposed walk back down I encountered a few shy ibex on the way before returning to my bike in the picnic area (no eating allowed inside Israeli parks). Here once again I uploaded my vlog in 5 minutes flat on park wifi 🤦🏻♀️
I’d planned to go much further but had enjoyed the park so much that I decided to take it easy and stop for the night at some hotsprings I’d been recommended. I smelled them before I saw them and after a bit of a hike down - past a sink hole warning sign - I found I nice flattish sandy spot near the water.
Famished, I ate dinner in daylight but in waiting for the other bathers to leave, darkness fell and I missed my chance. Perhaps in the morning..
