Threat of Nutrient Burn to Cannabis Plants
Professor DeBacco
Most Growers Over Fertilize Their Plants
Nutrient burn is typically a grower induced error when they do not properly calculate the nutrients needed by the plant.
Also, growers typically think more fertilizer can fix a wide range of problems when it actually can cause more.
Avoiding Nutrient Toxicity
Follow manufacturers recommendations
Know the pH values and concentrations of your nutrient solutions
Favor on the low side and work to higher concentrations after you see how the plant react
Recognize Deficiencies
Knowing what certain deficiencies look like will help you ensure you can correct problems early on.
Know Your Fertilizers
Many fertilizers have a blend of N-P-K so do not make application for one nutrient without considering the others.
Meaning if you calculate the amount of fertilizer to add for 120ppm of N do not forget about the P and the K as this could lead to an over application.
Have Specialty Fertilizers
It may be a good idea to have some fertilizers that are nutrient specific to ensure as a grower you can dial-in a fertilizer program if there is a deficiency noticed.
This is recommended at least for Nitrogen and Calcium/Magnesium.
Know Fertilizers Compatibility
Some fertilizers can be mixed, other will have reduced solubility and others are simply incompatible.
Test your mix before adding it to your plants.
