Verismo requires singers with strong technical foundation to survive the powerful declamatory singing over rich orchestras. There's much storytelling until the popular tunes appear, and clear diction, phrasing and accents are necessary to make these operas work.
Renata Tebaldi and her friends here were some of the last exponents of this art. Ettore Bastianini, Carlo Bergonzi, Fiorenza Cossotto, Mario del Monaco, Franco Corelli as well as the non-Italians George London, Nell Rankin and Jussi Bjoerling joined the great Tebaldi and recorded some of the most thrilling moments in the history of verismo operas.
A number of her greatest verismo roles such as La Wally, Margherita, Fedora, Minnie, Gioconda, Suzel, Manon Lescaut, Suor Angelica, Cecilia, Lauretta have not been included here but I hope you enjoy the scenes from her other roles.
