In a perfect universe, we would know everything about the population, such as the mean and standard deviation. In our imperfect world, however, we often estimate population parameters from the samples that we draw from that population. When we estimate, however, we lose one degree of freedom to vary in our sample and we have to use n – 1 in the formula for standard deviation.
