In this video you will learn Attributive and Predicative Adjectives. You will know how to use them attributively and predicatively. It is an advanced concept about the uses / usage of adjectives.
Two ways to use an adjective:
I. Attributively: Just before the noun – I like red roses. Here ‘red’ is an epithet or attribute.
II. Predicatively: As a subject complement – These roses are red.
Adjectives used only in Attributive Position:
Elder | live | old | little | mere | sheer
● My elder brother is a pilot. (Correct)
● He is elder than I. (Incorrect) He is older than I. (Correct)
● I saw a live fish. (Correct)
● This fish is live. (Incorrect) This fish is alive. (Correct)
● I have a little house. (Correct)
● My house is little. (Incorrect) My house is small. (Correct)
● He is a mere child. (Correct)
● That child is mere. (Incorrect)
● It’s sheer madness. (Correct)
● This madness is sheer. (Incorrect)
Adjectives used only in Attributive Position:
Afraid | afloat | alight | alike | alive | alone | asleep | awake | Well | ill
● I am afraid. (Correct)
● I am an afraid man. (Incorrect)
● I am a frightened man. (Correct)
● The baby is asleep. (Correct)
● He is an asleep baby. (Incorrect)
● The ship is afloat. (Correct)
● I was an afloat ship. (Incorrect)
● I was a floating ship. (Correct)
● He is very well. (Correct)
● He is a well man. (Incorrect)
● He is a fit/healthy man. (Correct)
● You look ill. (Correct)
● He is an ill person. (Incorrect)
● He is a sick person. (Correct)
