[FILMED ON November 5, 2017] St Mary’s Cathedral is one of Australia’s most beautiful and significant buildings. It is dedicated to Mary Help of Christians. This Gothic Revival–style cathedral display many features on the outside of the building such as the flying buttresses in the eastern and western facades, the canopies and statues in the northern gable, the text of the Ave Maria, the carved saints’ heads and figures of the gargoyles.
The interior of this cathedral is typical of Gothic Cathedrals in having a high central nave which is bordered by smaller aisles and leads a direct path to the high altar. There are five smaller prayer surrounding the high altar which provide intimate spaces for reflection.
Like many other Cathedrals, the stained glass windows are one of the highlight when visiting cathedral. The stained glass windows of the Cathedral are the work of the famous Hardman Studios in England. The most magnificent is the Great North Window which is depicting the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Housed in the central tower of the Cathedral is the Cathedral bells. The bells are rung in the English tradition. Change Ringing where each ringer rings s bell one after another is the method of bell ringing used at the Cathedral. The bells are in the upside down position and each of them is attached to a wheel and by pulling a rope from a room directly below, the bell will rotate and ring in tune with the other bells.
