Description
Surekha Yadav née Surekha Shankar Yadav(born 2 September 1965) is a female locopilot (train driver) of the Indian Railways in India. She became India's first female train driver in 1988. She drove the first "Ladies Special" local train for Central Railways when it was first introduced in the four metro cities by Mamata Banerjee the then Railway Minister, in April 2000.A momentous event in her career was on 8 March 2011, on the International Women's Day, when she became Asia's first woman train driver to drive the Deccan Queen from Pune to CST, through difficult but scenic topography, where she was greeted by the then Mayor of Mumbai Shraddha Jadhav, at CST, the headquarter of Central Railway zone. It was Surekha's dream-come-true as she drove one of the prestigious trains of the Central Railway, which carries the female of name; the Mumbai-Pune Railway Pravasi Sangh (association) strongly supported her to run this train. However, a commonly heard comment on her driving is that "Women don't drive railway engines".
Deccan Queen service was introduced on 1 June 1930 as a weekend train during the days of the British raj to ferry rich patrons -fans from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Poona (now Pune) to attend horse racing at Pune Race Course. The first service of the train was conducted from Calyan (now Kalyan) and Pune. It was converted to a daily service soon after, starting from Bombay Victoria Terminus(renamed Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus CSMTM). It is one of the longest running train service on the Indian Railways to have never run on steam power. From the beginning, the Deccan Queen has been run using electric locomotives. Occasionally, it was given diesel locomotives in case of original locomotive failure.
The color of its rake has seen a lot of changes, from red colour to yellow to white and then to blue.
The Deccan Queen has several firsts or 'among the firsts' to her credit: she was India's first superfast train, she was the first long distance electric hauled passenger train, she was one of India's first vestibuled trains. The Deccan Queen was the first to have a Ladies Only car, and amongst the first to feature a diner. The train has an exciting and chequered history. The Deccan Queen got a brand new rake in 1966, consisting of Indian Railways standard integral anti telescopic cars. For the first time since the history of the train, third class (now second class) passengers were allowed to travel by this train. It had only reserved first class since inception until 1966.
Deccan Queen is the second train in India having ISO 9000 certification and a dining car after the India's first ISO Certified train Shaan - E - Bhopal Express running between Bhopal Habibganj (Bhopal) - Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi). It has sixteen coaches including the engine.
The Deccan Queen is also one of the most favourite trains among railfans. Every year on 1 June, its regular pass-holders, railfans and railway authorities celebrate the train's birthday. Deccan Queen entered its 88th year of service on 1 June 2017.
Asia's first woman train driver Surekha Yadav will pilot the express and senior assistant loco pilot Trushna Joshi will assist her, he said. Sweta Ghone has been given the honour to work as on-duty guard of the Deccan Queen and will be giving clearance by waving the green flag on the Women's Day, Jain said. "Besides, the ticket-checking staff, RPF personnel and electric technician will also be all-women," he said. Jain also said that from March 8, train No. 11029 DN Koyna Express and train no. 11008 UP Deccan Express will permanently have women, ticket-checking staff.
