John Romita Sr. himself takes us inside Marvel Comics, and The Great Transition on Amazing Spider-Man from Steve Ditko to John Romita!
It's one of the greatest moments in comic book history - the passing of the torch on Amazing Spider-Man artist chores from legendary creator Steve Ditko, the man who co-created Spidey and brought much of the character's mythos to the book, developing the costume, gadgets and even writing the stories the this early era. And from that to rising star John Romita Sr, who's art would be the visual branding of Marvel for decades to come, after leaving the Amazing Spider-Man title, Romita became art director for years, and for years if you saw any merchandising of Spider-Man, it was Romita's artwork used for the product.
In this exclusive interview, John Romita Sr. tells us some of the overlooked moments of comic book history, giving us the inside story on the end of the Amazing Spider-Man Steve Ditko era, and the beginning of the John Romita Sr. era - a major change in comic book history, both for the title, the Amazing Spider-Man, and for Marvel itself. Landing ASM made Romita a superstar, and as art director his vision shepherded the look of the company's entire line of comics, and often Hollywood's adaptations. The 1967 Spider-Man cartoon used Steve Ditko's art primarily, but had some Romita bits in there, and in the early 80s, two Spider-Man cartoons that would use Romita's character designs, and when the legendary 80s Spider-Man TAS came around, again Spidey was modeled off of the classic Romita design, with only minimal adjustments that were barely perceptible.
But fans weren't happy at the time, Steve Ditko had legions of fans, and had built the world of Spidey up from scratch over 30+ issues. Fans were howling mad, and some fans are still upset about the change even today, as you can see from this video's comment section, where many have expressed their wish that Ditko would've been able to continue his work with the character.
