This video explained the pathophysiology, causes, risk factors, presentations, signs, complications, investigations and management of Meconium Aspiration Syndrome. (MAS)
Meconium Aspiration Syndrome. (MAS) occurs when the neonates aspirate the meconium stained liquor. This is one of the most important cause of respiratory distress in newborn, because it can have severe complications including pneumothorax, persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn (PPHN).
Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) presents with signs of respiratory distress eg. nasal flaring, suprasternal, subcostal insucking, barrel chest.
Investigations of MAS includes blood test eg. CRP, blood culture, chest x ray (CXR) may show diffuse opacity.
Management of MAS includes supportive management, for severe cases may require surfactant, inhaled nitric oxide, sedation, inotropes in case of PPHN.
