Globus Books Literary Translation Round Table presents poet, translator, and editor Boris Dralyuk. He will speak about the joys of rendering the Odessan language, a melting pot of Russian, Ukrainian, and Yiddish, seasoned with the jargon of thieves and stevedores. The language of Odessa has been immortalized in countless underworld ballads, the poems of Eduard Bagritsky, and the prose of Isaac Babel, whose Red Cavalry and Odessa Stories are available in Dralyuk’s translations.

Boris Dralyuk is the executive editor of the Los Angeles Review of Books. He is co-editor (with Robert Chandler and Irina Mashinski) of The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry, editor of 1917: Stories and Poems from the Russian Revolution and Ten Poems from Russia, and translator of Isaac Babel, Mikhail Zoshchenko, and other authors. His poems have appeared in The New Criterion, The Yale Review, Jewish Quarterly, and elsewhere.

Globus Books is an independent bookstore serving San Francisco since 1971. It offers a wide-ranging stock of books on all things Russia. Globus is actively working with the libraries across the states on completing their holdings for Russian publications, both contemporary and out-of-print.
