Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934):
NIMROD (ENIGMA VARIATIONS)
Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer. He is known for such works as the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, The Dream of Gerontius, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed oratorios, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.
"Nimrod" is the 9th variation from Elgar's "Enigma Variations" (1899). There are 14 variations, each cryptically labeled for a friend, often by initials. Nimrod was for his friend August Jaeger, a music editor who had offered steady encouragement and frank criticism early in Elgar’s composing career. "Jäger" is German for "hunter", and Nimrod was the Old Testament's "mighty hunter before the Lord". It is easily the best known of the variations and is often played at solemn ceremonies.
